Mentaiko is a very popular ingredient in Japanese cuisine, often eaten with onigiri and sake. It is also popular when spicy. It is marinated pollock roe, an ingredient that resembles clumped fish eggs. Introduced to Japan after the Russo-Japanese War, pollock roe originates from Alaska ("mentai" translates to "Alaska" and "ko" to "child").
