Japanese "ume" plums are the fruit of a tree related to both apricot and plum. Closer to apricots than plums, they can only be eaten after being macerated or cooked, not raw. The macerated plums are called "umeboshi" and are particularly popular with the Japanese for their salty and very sour taste.
